You know that feeling you get when you have not practiced for a few days? (For me 1 day). You are a little bored, uncertain, even claustrophobic. Your mind gets to thinking of creative ideas. You have to try them, but you cannot. (I start writing them down). When you are on vacation; even worse! We are individuals who found our passion.
So many people leave so much of their potential unfulfilled because they have jobs they do not like, or they have too much time on their hands. What’s even worse, they medicate the feelings away by overeating, drinking, buying things, creating drama…. etc.…etc. They give themselves the empty calories of life, instead of finding real nourishment.
Studies have shown that prolonged idleness can lead to mental decline. As the old saying goes, “Work nourishes noble minds.” Seneca, Moral Letters, 31.
This reminds us that the key to a long, balanced, fulfilling life lies in finding the right amount of work to fill our time meaningfully. While excessive work can lead to burnout, too much free time can be equally detrimental. By understanding the pitfalls of idleness and embracing virtues of meaningful work, we can navigate the paradox of time and lead more fulfilling lives.
I am just lucky I guess. Drumming called me a long time ago.
